3.6.1.7 Harvard University
Focus / Concentrations: Theoretical
Department / College: Department of Linguistics
If you’re into historical linguistics, perhaps you’ve been considering remaining at Harvard for your PhD. But according to popular wisdom, getting your undergrad and grad degrees at the same place is not the best idea. This is basically because it limits your opportunities for research and exposure to different types of academic environments. If you’re really sure you want to pursue historical linguistics, there are other places you can go, including Oxford. Of course, feel free to ignore this advice and apply to Harvard anyway! You might also consider applying to graduate school in the psych department or in some new cognitive science program that Pinker is heading. As of 2003, that stuff will be changing rapidly in the near future to become more linguistics-oriented.
The name is impressive. The undergraduate program is top-notch. The website offers a paucity of information about the types of research PhD students pursue at Harvard. In fact, one gets the impression that Harvard doesn’t like outsiders. In fact, my email went unanswered.
