3.6.1.29 University of Chicago
Focus / Concentrations: Theoretical
Department / College: Department of Linguistics
University of Chicago’s linguistics department is the oldest in the United States. It’s program is pretty well-rounded, and offers joint PhD programs with other departments including anthropology and psychology. Like Harvard, Chicago’s culture is very intellectual, which is nice, but it’s also got sucky winters, which is not. As of a few years ago, the department looked like it was in trouble after a bunch of its faculty retired, but after some recent hires it’s quite possible that this program will bounce back and regain its status as one of the top linguistics schools in the country.
Another top ranked program, the linguistics program at the University of Chicago is the oldest program in the United States. It promotes theoretical and interdisciplinary research. The school has labs for language modeling, discourse analysis, phonology, and semantics.
