linguistics information for everyone

1.2 Poverty of the Stimulus

with 2 comments

When you were a high school senior, did you have to undertake months of research in order to discover that Harvard, Stanford, or the University of Chicago were prestigious undergraduate programs? We didn’t think so. Figuring out how and where to apply to undergrad is a pretty simple process for most people, because they are literally bombarded with advice and information by parents, guidance counselors, etc. Sometimes you just go the school nearby. Sometimes you go to your parents school. And sometimes you go to Harvard, Stanford, the University of Chicago or another top school.

But when you’ve made the decision that you want to apply to graduate school in linguistics, no one is going to take you by the hand and let you know what materials you’re going to need, when you should send them, or where you should send them to. Later on, we’ll discuss where to get the information you need to make your decisions and meet those application deadlines.
