linguistics information for everyone

1.3 Linguistics is Key

leave a comment »

You’ve probably realized by now that graduate schools don’t care as much about your extra-curricular activities. But what you also need to keep in mind is that, for the most part, graduate programs also don’t care about your performance in non-linguistics courses or standardized tests. In fact, MIT and UCLA don’t even require GRE scores, because the GRE really has nothing to do with linguistics. So don’t start stressing out because you think your overall GPA isn’t good enough to get you into graduate school — if you’ve been doing well in linguistics classes then you’ve got a fighting chance of getting in anywhere. Even if your linguistics grades aren’t that stellar, a great recommendation from a professor may convince any department that you have a bright future in higher education.
