1.6 When do I need to start worrying about all this?

Although most applications for schools aren’t due until early January, you need to start worrying about graduate school in September. Why? A few reasons! If you want to apply for fellowships, there are many deadlines in the early and late fall. Also, you’re (probably) going to start working like an animal on your thesis pretty soon, so the sooner you can deal with asking professors for recommendations, researching schools, and all that fun stuff, the better. Finally, researching PhD programs takes time and effort. Scanning school websites is just the beginning. You should try to develop an email thread with different professors and talk to them on the phone if you can. If you’re able, attend a linguistics conference, join a professional organization (LSA.org, AAAL.org), and volunteer to help out.

Attending graduate school is partially a marketing exercise. It is important to know the differences between psycholinguistic and sociolinguistic approaches to the study of language, but it is also important to understand linguistics professors spend a great deal of time writing grants. Grant-writing is a very creative process. It is how you combine your developing intellectual prowess in linguistics with a creative flair to “get things done” that just may the real determining factor in getting into a PhD program.
