3.6 U.S. PhD Linguistics Programs

leave a comment »

The following summaries attempt to present basic information and assorted impressions of some (not all!) of the major graduate programs in the US. As we mentioned earlier, the research interests and reputations of graduate programs can shift quite rapidly, so the first disclaimer here is that all this information was compiled in 2003 and then again in 2010. Please add to this list of schools and/or share your experiences about these schools with others. We have not covered all of the schools. That’s where you can help. The second disclaimer is that the opinions presented here (which are given anonymously to protect our future careers) are definitely not reflections of the opinions any institution. The final disclaimer is that only institutions that offer PhD programs in theoretical linguistics or applied linguistics are listed.

No attempt has been made to rank the 83 programs we uncovered that offer PhD programs in theoretical linguistics or applied linguistics. The schools will be presented alphabetically. By our count, there are 53 schools that offer a PhD in Theoretical Linguistics, 26 schools that offer a PhD in Applied Linguistics, 3 schools that we have called  “General” because they seem to specialize in both theoretical and applied linguistics equally, and 3 schools that we have called “Specialized” because they simply don’t fit under the theoretical or applied designations.

3.6.1 Theoretical Linguistics Programs

3.6.2 Applied Linguistics Programs

3.6.3 General Linguistics Programs

3.6.4 Specialized Linguistics Programs

3.6.5 A Note on Masters Programs

3.6.6 Links to other sites that cover linguistics programs
