5.5 Writing Sample

leave a comment »

The writing sample, according to most applications, can be either a section of your thesis or an academic paper. However, unless you have a really great thesis topic, the paper is probably a better idea because it’s complete and therefore would give a better picture of how you write and conduct research.

Advice we’ve gotten from professors is to choose a paper that’s on a relatively interesting or unusual topic; submitting a paper on something that everyone’s written about doesn’t distinguish you from the other applicants. It’s also probably best to submit something that’s in the research area you want to pursue in graduate school, because the professors reviewing that paper will be the ones considering working with you later.

In the past, some schools have requested additional writing samples from certain applicants. So, don’t be shocked if this happens to you. If you are making the jump from a non-linguistics field, submit your best piece of academic research.
