The fact that the department here is called “Linguistics, Philology and Phonetics” pretty much sums up the outlook of this program (philology, by the way, equals historical linguistics). While there are professors here with regular linguistics interests, the majority of the faculty spend their days researching things like “Ancient Greek accentuation” and “historical linguistics of Portuguese.” If this sounds like heaven to you, or if you can’t get past the idea of going to grad school in the same place Tolkien wrote his Elvish languages, then go right ahead and apply.
