4.5.2 Is it better to have senior professors write for me, or professors who really know me?

That’s a good question. You should probably have at least one senior professor writing for you, and at least one professor who knows you really well. One thing to keep in mind is that some schools, like Penn, have professors rank every student they write a recommendation for (i.e. this student is my most favoritest of the bunch, this one is not). So you don’t want to get recommendations from three professors who are writing hundreds of letters. However, a big name can go pretty far — if you can get a recommendation from someone like Steven Pinker, take it, even if he has virtually no idea who you are.
