4.5.5 Is it a bad idea to get a recommendation from someone outside of academia?

with one comment

Given what we just said about having a non-linguistics professor write a letter on your behalf, it may be surprising that we have even asked this question. In a perfect world you would get all of your recommendations from the three most famous professors at your department. But that doesn’t always work out. We’ll say this. If you have to get a non-professor, make sure the person knows you very academically, has academic credentials (a former Fulbright scholar), or someone who can speak very well on your behalf and speak to your credentials as a linguist.
