6.2.5 What exactly goes on at an open house?

with one comment

It depends on the school, but most visits last about two days, during which you get a tour of the campus and department, then interview with professors who you are interested in or who are interested in you, and finally attend at least one grad student party. (For more on the interviews, see the next section)

The best part about the open houses, particularly if you will be attending more than one in succession, is the chance to meet other applicants. They’re all really nice people who won’t hate you for being a Harvard student, plus they’re linguists, so you can all talk about geeky linguistics stuff together. Some of them will end up in grad programs with you, and others you’ll be seeing later at conferences or on linglist or just at some point far into the unfathomable future.
